Bold Street festival brings crowds into Liverpool

Businesses received a much- needed boost this weekend as more than 20,000 people turned out for the Bold Street Festival.

Bustling Bold Street was an entertainment hub with pavement artists, street theatre, live music, a craft fair and dance.

Visitors explored the array of shops while sampling the food on sale and browsing the craft stalls that stretched all down the road.

Following on from last year's success, an art market and vintage fair at Leaf Tea Shop proved popular over the weekend.

On Saturday there was live art and busking in Ropewalks Square and a craft fair at Link19.

Yesterday saw a full road closure put in place for street entertainment and the return of the James Carling International Pavement Art Competition where 35 of the world’s best pavement artists decorated the streets with their impressive designs.

One of the highlights of the festival was the unveiling of a special piece of Beatles’ artwork. Paul, John, George and Ringo were painted on a section of Church Street pavement by “Dutch masters” Leon Keer, Ruben Poncia, Remko Van Schaik and Peter Westerink. The project took a week to complete and captures the band in the early 60s.

Natalie Hayward, owner of Leaf, said: “Saturday was the busiest day we’ve had since opening the shop just under a year ago. We were run off our feet both days.

“It’s great to see so many people flocking to Bold Street as it has so much to offer. All the businesses came together to make the event great and I’m so pleased with how it turned out.”

Mandy Vere, of News from Nowhere Bookshop, said: “Liverpool is lucky to have a unique street like Bold Street and it’s our way of giving something back to the community by putting on a bit of razzmatazz as the summer draws to a close. As independent businesses we’ve all been struggling over recent years so an event like this has given us the boost we needed.

Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of City Central BID, said: “Last year the festival attracted 14,000 and this year we’re expecting in the region of 20,000-25,000. This year’s festival has a real international feel.”
