City maps out retail therapy
• New city centre map combines culture, heritage and retail for first time
• First comprehensive review of the guide since 2003
• Media opportunity, Monday 18 July at Midday: partners unveil new guide
Liverpool is to launch the UK’s first ‘retail therapy’ map next week (Monday 18 July).
Developed by Liverpool City Council with input from Liverpool Cathedral, the University of Liverpool, The Mersey Partnership and Liverpool ONE - and in partnership with City Central BID, key retailers and Merseytravel - the new guide is a complete one stop guide to hotels, attractions and shops in the city.
It is the first in the city for almost a decade, and serves as the perfect companion for sightseers in the city - as well as providing a complete guide to Liverpool’s retail offering, reflecting the city’s meteoric rise back into the top five UK shopping destinations.
With the largest selection of museums and galleries anywhere outside London, it highlights the great cultural heritage that Liverpool has to offer.
Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “Liverpool is a great ‘walkable city’ with many landmarks between 15 and 30 minutes walk from each other.
“This new map highlights just how easy it is for tourists to make the most of their time in the city and see as many of Liverpool’s great attractions as possible.
“We also hope this will give a major boost to businesses by pointing thousands of people towards our many wonderful shops.”
Chris Bliss from Liverpool ONE said: “We have included a detailed retail map on the reverse section to demonstrate the growing importance of retail to the tourism sector and also to show visitors that the city has an extensive and varied range of shops to choose from, we feel that Liverpool offers something for everyone.”
Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise at Liverpool Cathedral, said: “This free map is packed full of useful information and is a fantastic resource for the millions of people who visit Liverpool, be they shoppers or day trippers looking to get the best out of our great city.”
Other partners who contributed to the map were St Johns and Clayton Square shopping centres and the Metquarter.
Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of City Central BID, added: “When you compare it to our last map it speaks volumes for the renaissance the city centre has undergone over the past decade and also shows how hard the public and private sector work together to build on those foundations.”
Half a million copies have been published and are being distributed throughout Merseyside and the North West, and will initially be available from 08 Place and Albert Dock Information centre.
