Festival set to showcase Liverpool’s entrepreneurial culture

The organisers of Liverpool’s Festival of Entrepreneurship next year have pledged that the event will showcase the city’s entrepreneurial culture for the world to see.

Liverpool will next March become the first European city to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC), a week-long event which regeneration agency Liverpool Vision says will attract “hundreds of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, thought leaders and economists from more than 100 countries”.

Vision is now hunting sponsors for the GEC, which includes a full congress programme and 25 fringe events.

Speaking at the GEC launch event on Friday night, held on the tall ship Mercedes in Canning Half Tide Dock, Vision’s chief executive, Max Steinberg, said keynote speakers would be unveiled shortly.

And he said: “We are talking about major national politicians, and national business figures, who are leaders in entrepreneurship.”

He added: “We will position Liverpool as a global enterprise hub.

“We want to create a legacy. We don’t want this to become a congress that comes here and goes.”

The GEC is organised by the Kauffman Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Kansas City, Missouri, devoted to entrepreneurship.

Every November the foundation runs Global Entrepreneurship Week, which includes more than 35,000 events worldwide.

Jonathan Ortmans, president of Global Entrepreneurship Week, said: “We are impressed by Liverpool’s history and the work that is being undertaken by so many across the city to develop a culture of entrepreneurship.

“The new jobs to sustain global economic recovery are coming from firms less than five years old.

“The Global Entrepreneurship Congress provides an environment for policymakers, researchers and exemplary practitioners alike to exchange ideas and strengthen connections that fuel the all-important global entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“We hope that it will inspire and encourage the talented individuals and organisations in Liverpool.”
