Global Entrepreneurship Week - 14 – 20 November 2011

Global Entrepreneurship Week - 14 – 20 November 2011

What is Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW)?

Global Entrepreneurship Week – which began life in the UK back in 2004 as Enterprise Week – is the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship and is recognised by organisations all over the UK as the highlight of the entrepreneurship calendar.

In 2010, 10 million people took part in the week, in 40,000 events held across 104 countries.

The UK host of GEW is Youth Business International (YBI), which already runs the event in ten other countries. YBI is a global network of independent non-profit initiatives helping young people to start and grow their own business and create employment. HRH The Prince of Wales is our President.

Why is GEW important?

We believe that a large national campaign to promote entrepreneurship is a vital part of making the UK more entrepreneurial, to encourage more people to start up their own business. The challenge we face is simple: whilst more than half of the population would like to start their own business, less than 5% actually do. Mass participation in activities designed to promote entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking can have proven outcomes in addressing key issues preventing prospective entrepreneurs from getting started.

As a result of last year’s campaign:

  • 45% of participants said that they were more likely to grow their business after attending an event during the week.
  • There was an increase of 60% in the number of participants who considered entrepreneurship as a good career choice after the week.

How can you get involved?

Every business starts with a conversation. Start yours today.

Every day in the UK people talk about making a change in their life, and consider starting up a business. GEW will help turn these exchanges into the businesses of tomorrow, and will kick-start a national conversation.

Join the conversation

  • Start a local conversation and spread the word about GEW through your network. We want as many people as possible to know about GEW and have the opportunity to take part in events and conversations happening across the country. Help us to spread the word and share www.gew.org.uk
  • Host an event – why not host a conversation yourself? We’ve got an easy step by step guide which takes you through all the stages of running a GEW event whether that’s a simple networking event for your members or a set of workshops for start up entrepreneurs in your area. For more ideas visit our Ideas Bank
  • Shout about what you do! As a business support organisation GEW is the perfect opportunity to make sure that people know about the support and opportunities you have available for entrepreneurs. Use GEW events to get PR about your work, PR Secrets to Success.
  • Take part in our discussion on Twitter and join a national conversation which will help turn initial conversations into action!

We are looking for partner organisations to tell us how you’re helping the businesses of tomorrow. Share the practical support you are making available via #GEWoffer

If you’re a budding entrepreneur then get out there and use #GEWask to share your anxieties, post queries and get support from others.

If you’re not on Twitter, then you can still join in. Send us your hints, tips and concerns to getinvolved@gew.org.uk and we will feed them into the conversation.
