Governor of Georgia Nathan Deal visits Liverpool to grow trade links
THE Governor of Georgia, in the US, is visiting Liverpool in a bid to boost trade links between his state and the North West of England.
Governor Nathan Deal, who took office in January, is visiting Liverpool and London on his first official overseas trip.
His visit to Merseyside, with a delegation of Georgian business leaders, is focusing on the ports, renewable energy and education sectors.
And he says Liverpool could soon welcome imports of biomass fuel made from Georgian pine trees. The fuel can be used to generate electricity.
Governor Deal said: “The use of biomass is increasing in the UK.
“Georgia is the Saudi Arabia of pine trees, which I’m told are the best biomass products for energy production in the world.
“We are probably going to see some biomass companies locating in this part of the country. I have put in a very good plug for the fact that if they need an overseas source, they should look for it in Georgia.”
During his visit, Governor Deal will discuss Peel Ports’ plans to build a “post-Panamax” terminal at the Port of Liverpool to accommodate larger ships.
The port of Savannah, in Georgia, is planning a similar development.
The Governor said Georgia’s higher education institutions, including Georgia Tech and Emory University, in the state capital, Atlanta, could build on their existing links with universities in Merseyside in fields from engineering to life sciences.
Governor Deal’s trip was organised by UK Trade and Investment and regeneration agency Liverpool Vision.
Vision’s deputy chief executive, Mike Taylor, said: “Liverpool has regained its international outlook and reputation, and this delegation is just the latest to the city looking for development and investment opportunities, as well as an exchange of knowledge and expertise.
“Ties already exist between Liverpool and Atlanta thorough our universities and chambers of commerce and our planned discussions on port development, energy and technology will serve to bind us yet closer and see our emerging friendship grow.”
