Liverpool residents lead riots community clean-up, after organising using social media
Neighbours in Liverpool and Wirral took to the streets yesterday determined to rectify the damage made by the recent criminal disturbances.
Armed with brushes and buckets, a crowd in Liverpool who organised themselves using social networking websites came together and deployed across any damaged streets.
The group, which was more than 100-strong, worked from around 9am clearing debris and “showing the real spirit of people in this city”, according to one of the volunteers.
The clean-up operation, which took place in Earle Road, Lawrence Road, Smithdown Road, Lodge Lane and other streets around Toxteth, was organised by 21-year-old bartender Charles Jupiter, who set up a facebook group called Clean Up Liverpool when he saw the first sign of damage on Monday.
Speaking to the Daily Post at the Earl Marshall pub, on Earle Road, he said: “The rioters aren’t the only ones organising themselves via social networking sites, we can do it, too. We’ll do more cleaning up than they make mess, and there’s more of us, they can’t win.”

Paul Brant, deputy leader of the council, was on the streets yesterday morning taking part in the operation to clean up any damaged areas.
He said: “People have come not just from Toxteth, but from all areas of the city to show their support. It’s heartwarming to see the real face of Liverpool out in force today.
“It shows the hard-working, law- abiding majority totally reject the criminal violence carried out by a small group. We will not be held to ransom by these people.”
By late morning, the damaged cars from Claughton Road and Park Road South had been towed away and the street was returning to normality, with broken glass swept off the roads.
