Almost £2m is to be ploughed into helping up to 2,500 people into work in Liverpool.

The cash has been secured from the European Social Fund and will go towards finding work for unemployed people over the next two years.

It will support the production of outreach work and engaging with people; providing advice, information and guidance; support before and after employment and help with transport to and from work.

Priority groups including those in receipt of incapacity benefit, employment allowance and those who have been made redundant or face the prospect of losing their job have been identified as target groups for the funding.

About 2,500 people are expected to be helped into employment and training between now and 2014, said Liverpool City Council.

It comes as the latest unemployment figures for January 2012 showed the number of jobseekers in Liverpool rose from 6.8 per cent to 7.1 per cent of the workforce.

Councillor Nick Small, cabinet member for employment, enterprise and skills said: "Although the rise in unemployment over the last year in Liverpool has been lower than elsewhere, and many new jobs have been created in the city in the last decade, we still have major issues with long term worklessness.

"This will enable us to assist a substantial number of people and help us develop a well trained workforce that is well placed to take advantage of the city’s improving economic fortunes."
