Liverpool Vision mission seeks to set up network of business agents across China

Liverpool Vision has appointed a new representative in Shanghai as it seeks to build on the city’s World Expo legacy and find new opportunities for trade and investment across China.

And the city’s regeneration agency has taken the first step towards creating a network of business representatives across China, supported by the city’s private sector, to forge trading links.

Helen Wang, previously a senior inward investment officer with UK Trade and Investment in Shanghai, will work closely with her former colleagues and the China-Britain Business Council, based in the city.

Vision head of investment and international, Ailsa Horne, said: “She has well established networks and marketing and research skills that will support Liverpool’s activities in Shanghai and beyond.”

One of her first tasks was to co-ordinate the current City of Liverpool delegation led by Cllr Nick Small, cabinet member for employment enterprise and skills, to Shanghai and the South West China city of Nanning.

The delegation, including Vision deputy chief executive Mike Taylor and Liverpool’s Chinese Business Champion Dr Lee Kai Hung who originates from Nanning, met political and business leaders during a three-day visit.

They discussed locating a Liverpool investment manager in Nanning and forming a partnership between Dr Lee and Liverpool Vision on behalf of Liverpool council.

Cllr Small said: “We have been keen for some time to understand potential friendships we could develop in other parts of China and we know from our experience with Shanghai that it takes a number of years to establish the right connections, but when you do the benefits are tangible.

“We were invited to exhibit at the World Expo last year precisely because we’d worked hard on our friendship with Shanghai for many years and it has resulted in a raft of benefits for Liverpool and our businesses.”

“Dr Lee is the UK director of liaison on behalf of the Nanning General Chamber of Commerce.

“Through his commercial links and investments in the city he is opening up to Liverpool established relationships with local political and business leaders and offers invaluable local knowledge.

“This, though, is the first step in the journey and our ambition is to develop an extended Liverpool/Chinese network across the country with support from our private sector.”

Nanning has a population of 6.6m. It is the capital of Guangxi province which neighbours Guangzhou, and is part of the South China region that has significant trade potential.

Dr Lee said: “Liverpool is continuing to make impressive efforts in China and is now looking for collaborations which present credible opportunities to work together and to forge stronger, mutually beneficial relationships with other regional centres across China.

“There are a number of sectors in common, including life sciences, low carbon technologies and creative and digital, and our discussions are exploring how, together, we can enhance opportunities for Liverpool and Nanning commerce and to establish a Liverpool presence in this city.”
