Lord Mayor visits businesses affected by August Riots
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Frank Prendergast will be meeting business owners in the Lawrence Road and Lodge Lane areas of Wavertree to discover how they have successfully recovered from the riots of August 2011.
The visit on Thursday, November 17, has been organised by Liverpool Vision and Liverpool City Council’s neighbourhood teams who have been working with more than 30 businesses in the area following the civil unrest in the summer.
Cllr Prendergast will visit a new business created in the wake of the riots, Singhy and Gido’s Delicious Deli; a business that was badly damaged, Pound Plus; and a firm of accountants, Whitfield Accounting and Integrated Services who act on behalf of the business community.
He will also visit the Muslim Enterprise Development Centre (MEDS) which provides support to businesses in the area and TIBER on Lodge Lane, from where the ‘Loving Lodge Lane’ campaign was started in June 2011.
Cllr Prendergast said: “This community is showing achievement, resilience and entrepreneurship and deserves a great deal of credit for how it has moved on and recovered from the serious incidents of the summer.
“Instead of shutting up shop or moving away they are working hard at capturing the attention of their customers by providing a friendly service and a unique offering and I am really very encouraged by their fortitude.
“This has been a real team effort and Liverpool Vision and our neighbourhood teams have worked closely with the businesses, MEDS and TIBER to ensure that this is not just business as usual, but better business than ever before.
“The whole community has rallied around here and I am delighted to learn that the members of the Lawrence Road Church have collected £3,000 to help their local businesses.”
Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company led a team set up in the wake of the riots to ensure a swift reaction and to help businesses apply for funds from the government’s Riot Damages Act and the Local Authorities High Street Support Scheme.
Jenny Douglas from Liverpool Vision, who chaired the Business Recovery Group, said: “This area was the focus of the unrest in August and businesses in the area certainly suffered, but in little more than 100 days they have bounced back as we were confident they would.
“There is real belief and resilience among businesses and residents around Lawrence Road and Lodge Lane and their determination and cheerfulness in the face of this hardship has won out.
“It has been a real team effort with Liverpool Vision’s area managers on the ground working with the city council’s neighbourhood teams and local councillors in making sure the impact from the riots was minimal.
“We have helped them to claim everything they have been entitled to and we will continue to support them as they continue to rebuild the area’s reputation.”
