Transport group National Express has invested £1.5m and created 20 jobs in a new TransPennine bus link serving Liverpool John Lennon airport.
The 24/7 service, in collaboration with partners Selwyn’s Travel, will operate 10 times a day every two hours each day, apart from Christmas Day, and includes Bradford, Leeds, Manchester Airport, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon airport, Liverpool city centre, and Birkenhead on its route.
It marks the return of the national transport company to Liverpool JLA after a 10-year period, and the firm said the new route and the six new coaches that have been acquired to serve it demonstrate its confidence in the future of Liverpool JLA.
National Express managing director Andrew Cleaves said: “We think it is going to be a great service.
“A £1.90 ticket will take you from Birkenhead to the city centre or Liverpool JLA.”
He added: “We’re very happy to be back. We think the airport has a great future. The airport has great links with the city and it is possible to pass very quickly through departures to the plane.”
Craig Richmond, chief executive of Peel Airports, which includes Liverpool JLA, said: “We welcome this investment made by National Express to further improve our public transport links.”
The first coach to enter service yesterday was named after Wirral children’s charity Zoe’s Place, and Mr Richmond added: “We are very proud to support Zoe’s Place, one of our airport charities, and the coach naming will help to spread the message about the incredible work they do.”
Keith Blundell, Liverpool council’s head of tourism, also welcomed the establishment of the new National Express service, saying: “It is very important to see vehicle links with the rest of the country.”
The council operates a tourism desk at Liverpool JLA, and Mr Blundell added: “We are there to make sure as many people as possible stay in Liverpool, but it is also important to have easy connections in and out of the airport, and it shows a lot of faith from National Express in Liverpool JLA, which is very encouraging.”
Carol Kirkham, Zoe’s Place fundraising manager, said: “This will make a difference in helping to raise our profile and awareness of our work.”
National Express says the service will provide 30,000 seats a month to and from the airport, and has been timed to cater for the early and late arriving and departing flights
