Record China sales for Vauxhall parent General Motors
General Motors (GM), parent company of Ellesmere Port Astra maker Vauxhall, has reported record sales in China.
The group and its Shanghai-based joint ventures completed a record 2,547,171 vehicle sales in China in 2011, an 8.3% increase on the previous high of 2,351,610 sold in 2010.
It means GM remains the sales leader among global automakers in China for the seventh consecutive year.
Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China Group, said: “GM stayed ahead of the competition, despite a slowdown in the growth of industry demand thanks to our broad portfolio of appealing vehicles.
“GM and our joint ventures introduced 12 new models in 2011 while expanding our manufacturing and product development capability to meet rising demand.”
Among GM’s popular brands were the Buick, Excelle and the LaCrosse sedan, its Opel brand – the European version of Vauxhall – and its electric vehicle Volt.
