Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra win prestigious Gramophone Award
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchesrtra has been awarded the Orchestral Recording of the Year award at the Gramophone Awards in London.
The orchestra, and its chief conductor Vasily Petrenko, were given the honour for their recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No10.
The awards, often called the 'Oscars' of the classical music world, were presented at a lunch at London’s Dorchester Hotel today.
The recording, released in September 2010, is one of the first five volumes in a critically-acclaimed cycle of the complete symphonies by Shostakovich to be released on CD by Naxos.
It is the second time in three years the RLPO has won a Gramophone Award, after taking Orchestral Recording of the Year in 2009 for its recording of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony.
Vasily Petrenko, who is currently in America conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, was unable to be at this afternoon’s ceremony.
Instead the award was collected by the Phil’s principal percussionist, Graham Johns, who read a message from Petrenko, which said: “Shostakovich has been in my life for as long as I can remember, and to have the opportunity to explore his complete symphony cycle and put them on record is a major project for us and also a great opportunity.”
