St John's Shopping Centre report footfall surge

Liverpool's St John’s shopping centre has recorded a rise of almost 10% in the number of shoppers coming through its doors.

The centre, owned by the UK’s biggest property group Land Securities, along with the neighbouring Clayton Square shopping centre, has attracted 9.4m shoppers in the year to the end of October.

That is an increase of 840,000 compared with the previous year and is a result of the centre offering the right mix of value retailers, the group said.

Jams Larmuth, portfolio manager for Land Securities, told LDP Business: “Consumers are taking more time to shop around for items and researching where to find the best deals so that every single pound works as hard as it possibly can.

“We are striving to cater for these shopping habits by adding more value brands, such as Aldi and Home Bargains, and quality, independent fast-fashion retailers such as Kiss, Storm, Pretty Plus, Twist and Rebellious, to the centre’s retail offer, and we will continue to work hand in hand with retailers to strengthen the diversity of stores for our shoppers.”

He said another attraction for shoppers has been the launch of Britain’s first privately paid for city centre ‘cop shop’ which gives Merseyside Police a presence in the centre in a unit that has been provided rent free for the next three years, funded by businesses via the city centre BID (Business Improvement District) organisation.

Land Securities said the police presence has reduced anti-social behaviour, allowing their own security teams to spend more time patrolling and assisting shoppers.

The St John’s update was included in yesterday’s half year group results to September 30, which showed a 17.2% increase in revenue profits of £159.3m, but a 16.8% decline in pre-tax profits of £378.9m.

Chief executive Francis Salway said: “We have consistently stated that we did not expect to see a straight-line recovery in our market and we seen no reason to adjust this outlook. We also believe that market uncertainty may well generate buying opportunities as the balance between buyers and sellers shifts for some property types.”
