Success of Liverpool Echo Arena makes Exhibition Hall vital
THE SUCCESS of the Echo Arena and Convention Centre drove the need to build the new waterfront Exhibition Hall, chairman David McDonnell told the Daily Post.
More than 420 conferences welcoming more than 215,000 people have been staged at the BT Convention Centre since it was opened in 2008.
A further 1.7m people have been to 380 events at the Echo Arena.
But Mr McDonnell said in order to move into the European conference market, more space was needed, and that he was confident the venue would be well used, with expressions of interest from some major exhibitors.
He said: “There have been discussions with various customers and clients and with other organisations about the attractiveness of this venue for bigger exhibitions.
“There are also a number of big events that we have not been able to stage because we did not have space for them.
“Quite a lot of market research has been done to make sure the market was there and the venue would be attractive to it.”
Echo Arena and Convention Centre chief executive Bob Prattey added: “The new venue will enable us to build a market share and to attract even larger and more lucrative events.”
Robert Nadler, chief executive of the Seel Street hotel Base2Stay and a member of the Mersey Partnership’s visitor economy committee, added: “Business tourism is a key driver of the region’s economy and this development will mean thousands more midweek visitors coming to Liverpool every year.
“It’s great news for the city.”
