Tate Liverpool launches iPhone app featuring Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte
Tate Liverpool's 'Magritte Your World' app TATE Liverpool has launched an iPhone app to bring the works of Belgian surrealist René Magritte to life.
The Albert Dock gallery is currently housing a blockbuster exhibition of the work of the Belgian artist, perhaps best-known for his iconic images of anonymous men in bowler hats.
And to tie in with the exhibition, called René Magritte: The Pleasure Principle, the Tate is offering a free iPhone app where people can add some of those men to their own images.
The “Magritte Your World” app features an animation inspired by one of the artist’s most famous paintings, Golconda, which is on display at Tate Liverpool. The app, available through Apple’s App Store, has been designed by creative collective Dorothy.
Dorothy’s Ali Johnson, who lives in Liverpool, said: “The app allows you to take photos or videos on your iPhone camera, or use pictures from your library, and them make it into an animation.
"It uses a recurrent theme in his work – the suited and booted businesspeople raining from the sky.
“It’s an opportunity for us to take a well-known image and bring it up-to date.

“We’ve had a great response, People have been sharing their images via Flickr and Facebook, and there is a public gallery where people can show off their images or animations.”
Manchester-based Dorothy previously worked on the launch campaign for the Tate’s Picasso exhibition last year.
Ms Johnson said: “We’re really interested in ways of getting the Tate’s message outside the gallery space.
“What we’re hoping with this app is that it appeals to people who wouldn’t think about going to a Magritte exhibition, or who geographically aren’t able to go.
“What we’ve also found is that parents give their iPhones with this app to the kids to keep them entertained.
"So it’s family-focused, and introduces the kids to this kind of art.”
