World Expo credited for helping Liverpool school’s success as Merseyside students set to toast record GCSE results
Merseyside pupils were today expected to join thousands across the country and celebrate record GCSE results.
Nationally, nearly one in four GCSE entries could be awarded at least an A grade in what is expected to be another record year of results.
Experts also predict around one in 12 exams could score a coveted A*.
Merseyside local authorities were also hopeful of record results as GCSE passes nationally were set go up for the 24th consecutive year.
And one Liverpool school revealed the secrets of its success – sending its pupils to China.
Walton secondary Archbishop Beck was today expected to bag its best-ever set of results.
And delighted headteacher Paul Dickinson revealed high-flying students expecting top grades included two 16- year-old students who returned from China with “an extra edge” which helped them thrive in exams.
Rebecca Worrell, from Walton, and Sarah Goldsmith, from Orrell Park, were among 60 Liverpool secondary students who acted as ambassadors at the World Expo, in Shanghai, last year.
And Mr Dickinson, impressed at the way the girls embraced the experience, revealed that Chinese will be introduced to pupils when they start school.
He said: “They were focused anyway, but the experience really motivated them and further raised their aspirations.
“We will be introducing Chinese from September, as it will not just develop language skills, but involve the cultural side of things, too.”
