Major roadworks will be "good for business"
The first phase of a year-long programme of road repairs gets underway in the centre of Liverpool’s commercial district today (Monday 29 March).
A large number of maintenance and resurfacing projects are scheduled to take place across the area in the next 12 months, affecting many major routes including Dale Street, Castle Street, Cook Street and Old Hall Street.
The programme is a public sector funded initiative supported by Liverpool CDP and Liverpool Vision, and will result in significant changes to many of the city’s roads, including the introduction of pedestrian areas in Dale Street and Castle Street.
United Utilities will begin its own essential maintenance works in Old Hall Street this morning, excavating parts of the busy commuter road between Union Street and King Edward Street, with motorists advised to find an alternative route.
Planning chiefs hope that traffic disturbance will be kept to a minimum and point to the work of United Utilities as evidence of an effort by all parties to adopt a joined-up approach.
Paul Rice, chief executive of Liverpool CDP, said: “The scheme is an excellent example of a public/private sector partnership in operation both in terms of securing the funding, agreeing the design concept and ensuring necessary maintenance works are carried out prior to the main programming starting.
“For Liverpool to be considered a top-class business destination and attract inward investment, it’s essential that our public realm fits the bill and we are able to compare ourselves favourably to our competitors.
“Aesthetically speaking, areas such as Dale Street and Castle Street are among the finest in the country and these changes will allow them to realise their full potential. In the long run, it will be very good for business.”
