Liverpool Vision Appoints New Chief Executive
MIKE Parker, Chairman of Liverpool Vision, today announced the appointment of Max Steinberg as the company’s new Chief Executive.
Max will replace Jim Gill who announced his decision to retire earlier this year.
Max Steinberg, who was awarded the OBE in 1997 for services to Housing and Regeneration on Merseyside, began his career at Liverpool City Council in 1975 before moving to the Housing Corporation.
During 25 years at the Housing Corporation, Max worked in all aspects of housing, eventually becoming Director of Investment and Regeneration North before becoming Chief Executive of Elevate East Lancashire in 2003. Since 2009 he has been Chief Executive of Regenerate Pennine Lancashire Ltd, one of the largest Economic Development Companies in the UK.
Under Max’s leadership Regenerate Pennine Lancashire has been responsible for an economic development programme which has seen the creation of over 1,000 new businesses and the attraction of £10m of private investment; the development of the Pennine Lancashire Brand through events such as the highly successful ‘Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food and Culture’; and agreement of an Integrated Investment Strategy with seven local authorities, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the Homes and Communities Agency.
Welcoming Max to Liverpool Vision, Mike Parker said: “Our search for a new chief executive attracted great interest nationwide and we were able to assemble a very strong shortlist of candidates.”
“We are delighted that Max Steinberg has accepted the opportunity to become Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision. He has an impressive track record of innovation and achievement and impressed with his understanding of the issues facing Liverpool Vision and the City of Liverpool.
“The next few years will provide Liverpool with both a huge challenge through the squeeze on public expenditure, but also significant opportunities to build on the city’s worldwide brand and improved image.”
“Max’s knowledge and experience will be invaluable in helping us to take maximum advantage of those opportunities. I, the Board and staff of Liverpool Vision are looking forward to working with Max as we move out of recession and into the next phase of the City’s development.”
Max, who is 58, has also been on the board of Liverpool John Moores University European Institute of Urban Affairs since 1992 and its chairman since 2001. He is currently a board member of the National Housing and Planning Advice Unit, a board member of the Riverside Housing Group and was a non-executive director of Kensington Regeneration from 2003-2006.
Max Steinberg, who is expected to take up his new role in July said: “I have always been passionate about my home City and I am excited to be returning to work in Liverpool. I welcome the many and varied challenges that this new role will bring in helping take forward the remarkable progress that the City has achieved in recent years. I have very much enjoyed my seven years in Pennine Lancashire and I have relished leading a team which has laid the foundations for increased prosperity and life choices for the people who live there”.
Cllr Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council and deputy Chairman of Liverpool Vision said: “Max Steinberg is one of UK’s leading practitioners in urban regeneration, housing and economic development and he is a very experienced chief executive and managing director in the public sector. I am delighted we have got him.”
“Most importantly Max has a depth of knowledge about Liverpool and the challenges we face at this critical time, which will enable him to pick up the reins at Liverpool Vision very quickly and help to push the city’s regeneration and economic development through the World Expo in Shanghai and beyond.”
Cllr Joe Anderson, leader of the Labour group on Liverpool City Council and a Board member of Liverpool Vision, added: “Liverpool Vision has played an important role in the transformation of the city and it’s important that it continues to do so in a changing economic landscape.”
“Max Steinberg has a reputation as a pioneer of new funding methods, partnership working and regulation over a 30-year period and he has a clear understanding of the opportunities in the public, private and voluntary sectors. I am sure he will help drive the city forward and help realise our ambitions.”
